Design & Technology

Why is D&T important?

Design and Technology is a subject which allows young people to work with their hands and their brains. We need practical, problem solving students to address the changes that face us. Staff make sure that students get the chance to understand how exciting and rewarding a  career in design & technology can be.

D&T at KS3

During Key Stage 3, students spend 8 to 9 weeks in each subject area, either food, graphics, resistant materials or textiles. At the end of each rotation there is a mini- test, based on what the students have learned, and an assessment level given for the product that they have made.

D&T at KS4

In KS4 the students learn the theory side of the subject in more detail and produce a number of projects which will stimulate their learning and help them gain the skills knowledge and understanding they need for their course work in Year 11.

Beyond the Classroom

Students are encouraged to attend extra curricular clubs after school, take part in the yearly D&T exhibition of students work and go on visits to places of interest.

How can parents support their child?

You can support you child by establishing a routine of completing homework and making sure that it is returned to the subject teacher on time. Please check their homework diary every week to see if the subject teacher has made any comments. If there are any issues in providing ingredients for your child’s food lesson, please contact the subject leader or simply send a note in with your child.
