Why is PE Important?
PE is a compulsory element of the National Curriculum because it is recognised that it has an important role to play in increasing self-esteem and the confidence of students. It encourages participation, achievement and excellence. It allows students to work within routines and rules as well as being an important link to the community through external clubs and an encouragement to lifelong participation and physical health and well-being. Research evidence has clearly shown a link between regular participation in PE and improved academic performance.
PE at KS3
Students learn to develop physical skills and knowledge in a wide range of activities including team games, racquet and net sports, gymnastics, athletics and striking and fielding games. In addition, students develop the physical and mental capacity to extend their knowledge of rules, recording, physical demands, health and fitness. They are also given the opportunity to improve their ability to make and apply decisions and replicate techniques accurately. In addition there is a focus on improving the ability to analyse their own performance and that of others in order to influence and improve their technique.
PE at KS4
In Key Stage 4 students are given the opportunity to develop those skills learnt in Key Stage 3 by active participation in physical activities that they have the opportunity to choose. This allows them to develop tactics and strategies as well as improve their ability to coach and officiate. All these skills develop a students self-discipline and self-esteem as well as improving personal, moral, physical and spiritual needs.
We also look to extend the number of activities available during Year 11 by using facilities in the local community such as the Goals soccer centre, Canons swimming pool and gym as well as a local golf driving range and ten pin bowling alley.
PE helps students develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.
Beyond PE Lessons
In order to achieve these aims the PE staff as well as the School Sports Co-ordinator work closely with local clubs and external coaches to ensure that extra-curricular activities are delivered to a high standard and are available to all students. The most is made of our fantastic facilities which include a modern sports hall, gym and full sized all-weather pitch.
How can parents support their child?
PE is a compulsory element of the National Curriculum and therefore all parents and carers must ensure that their children arrive to each PE lesson ready to participate. In addition, parents and carers can encourage their children to take part in the wide selection of extra-curricular clubs and activities.
