A Taste of University Life!

LJMU_01

On Wednesday 30th June, eight year 10 and two year 11 students from Bishopsford Arts College traveled to Liverpool to attend the Liverpool John Moores University Open Day. They were welcomed to the university on a day that is usually only open to sixth form students as a result of the strong links that the school has formed with LJMU since becoming a trust school in November 2009.

The students pre-selected the course talks they were interested in and attended presentations on teacher training, science, law, media and arts courses. They were able to view the facilities available to students as well as tour the city of Liverpool. The financial element to university choices was also discussed.

All students were extremely positive about the visit and reported that it had been a valuable experience. Many of the students felt that the experience had broadened their knowledge of what true university life was like and a number of preconceptions were changed. Furthermore, a number of the attendees now say they will not limit their university choices to those close to the London area. They returned invigorated and focused on broadening their knowledge of university courses available.

Student views:

"Liverpool is a beautiful city and is definitely a place I would consider coming to visit. This experience has taught me that you need to visit lots of universities to get a feel for the place and don’t just limit yourself to ones that are close."

"The day has made me really think abut what I want to do as a career. There may be jobs and courses out there that at the moment I am unaware of that might really suit me. I need to do some more thinking and fact finding."

Andrew Barker, Principal, said: "The Trust was formed to provide more opportunities broaden the horizons and aspirations of our young people and support them in achieving their absolute best. This is the first of many such opportunities to come".
