Bishopsford Students meet Children's Commissioner for England
Four Bishopsford students, including 2 year 12s from Bishopsford Sixth Form, met with Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England, at the NET 5th Annual Lecture on Tuesday 22nd March at the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London.
Her lecture, ‘Children’s voice and their entitlement to education’, was addressed to a full house with a host of educational and political organisations represented. Atkinson urged schools to listen more to children and said “Everything we do must have the child’s best interests at heart”. She cited the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to illustrate her point that children have a right to be heard.
3 schools were invited to the event, including Bishopsford Arts College, which has worked with National Education Trust since becoming a Trust School in 2009. After the lecture, Atkinson spent more than half an hour in discussion with the students who attended. Assistant Vice Principal, J. Humber, who accompanied the students said: “It has been a great experience for us to meet the
Children’s Commissioner and attend this event in such a distinguished venue. The young people really appreciated the amount of time Maggie Atkinson took to listen to their views. This is a great example of how students can gain fantastic and unique opportunities when schools build relationships with external partners.”
